How we refinish a stained door
We protect the entry and surrounding walls, remove or mask hardware, and strip or sand away failed finish down to sound wood. Next we condition and stain the door, test the color with you, and apply multiple coats of UV-resistant exterior clear finish, sanding lightly between coats for a smooth result.
Doors are often part of a bigger project. We can refinish them along with your exterior painting, interior painting or cabinet and wood finishing.

Door painting and staining questions
Should I paint or stain my wood front door?
If the door is solid wood with attractive grain, stain and a clear protective finish usually look best. If the wood is damaged, patched or a lower-grade species, or you want a bold color, paint is the better choice. We'll look at your door and tell you honestly.
How often does a stained front door need refinishing?
Doors in full sun or near the coast often need a fresh clear coat every one to three years. Shaded doors can last longer. Recoating before the finish fails is much cheaper than stripping and re-staining.
Can you refinish a door without taking it off the hinges?
Often, yes. For the best finish on heavily weathered doors, we sometimes remove hardware or the door itself. We'll make sure your home stays secure while we work.
Do you paint garage doors and interior doors too?
Yes. We paint metal and wood garage doors and all interior doors and frames, usually alongside an interior or exterior painting project.
